Irma Cannavo

Irma Cannavo is an American born artist whose visual work focuses on using a combined variety of mediums. She uses found objects, acquired objects, various fine art tools, and printed collage material to create and construct her work. Irma Cannavo has created three dimensional flag pieces using found and acquired objects as her background and painted the American flag opaquely over the objects since 2001. She creates various images of the flag since. Cannavo also uses stencils, masking and layering techniques, and digital effects. She typically uses a bright bold range of colors which typically used in combination with one another would become obtrusive but she finds a way to perspectively mute them through her own form of controlled chaos.

Irma Cannavo also focuses on ideas of love, the idea of forever, and communication. She is drawn to various types of artists and admires visual artists like Keith Haring and Andy Warhol. Spawned from a family of machinists, musicians, and dreamers Irma Cannavo specialized in "mixed media". "With the advancement of technology anything can be termed as mixed media. I choose to describe my work in this category because I incorporate drawn images, found objects, stencils, and a wide range of mediums to convey an idea or theme. Art can be found virtually anywhere it is limitless. My work is compiled from social culture. My intention is for the work to visually entice the viewer. I think that art should directly relate to the society in which we live in. For me it is most important to have people look at my work no matter what there opinions might be. You may not fully comprehend my work at first glance, but it will definitely catch your eye for a couple of seconds. Creating chaos with and without order," Cannavo says. She's come a long way from digging with a silver kitchen tablespoon looking for rocks to paint.
